Information

Crystic 397PA is a pre-accelerated, isophthalic/neopentyl glycol polyester resin designed to withstand high temperatures and resist chemical degradation. It is specifically formulated for creating high-performance laminates suitable for critical applications in harsh environments. This resin offers excellent water and chemical resistance, making it ideal for industries requiring robust and durable materials.

Applications

1. Chemical Processing Equipment: Utilized in the manufacturing of tanks, pipes, and other equipment exposed to aggressive chemicals due to its superior chemical resistance.
2. Marine Industry: Suitable for components in boats and marine structures that require high heat resistance and durability against saltwater.
3. Automotive Industry: Used in the production of parts that need to withstand high temperatures and exposure to various chemicals.
4. Industrial Laminates: Applied in creating laminates for environments where high temperature and chemical resistance are crucial, such as in refineries and chemical plants.
5. Filament Winding Processes: Ideal for creating cylindrical components through filament winding, providing excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance.

Benefits

1. High Heat Deflection Temperature: Capable of maintaining structural integrity under high temperatures, making it suitable for high-heat applications.
2. Excellent Chemical Resistance: Resistant to a wide range of chemicals, which ensures longevity and reliability in harsh chemical environments.
3. Water Resistance: Offers robust protection against water ingress, making it suitable for marine and other water-exposed applications.
4. Pre-accelerated Formula: Simplifies the curing process and ensures consistent performance.
5. Versatile Application Methods: Can be used in both contact molding and filament winding processes, providing flexibility in manufacturing techniques.

Detailed Product Characteristics

• Appearance: Opaque liquid
• Resin Type: Isophthalic/neopentyl glycol polyester
• Catalyst: Recommended catalysts include Catalyst M or Butanox M50.
• Specific Gravity: 1.11 (liquid), 1.22 (cured)
• Heat Deflection Temperature: High, exact value depends on curing schedule
• Chemical and Water Resistance: Excellent

Usage Instructions

• Preparation: Ensure the resin is at workshop temperature (18ºC - 20ºC) before use.
• Mixing: Add the catalyst at the recommended ratio (1-2%) and mix thoroughly.
• Application: Suitable for hand-lay and filament winding applications. Ensure proper ventilation when applying due to styrene emissions.
• Post Curing: For optimal properties, post-cure the laminates for 3 hours at 80ºC or 16 hours at 40ºC.

Storage and Handling

• Storage Conditions: Store in the dark in closed containers, ideally below 20ºC and not exceeding 30ºC.
• Shelf Life: Use within the shelf life specified on the container, typically 3 months.
• Handling Precautions: Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety guidelines. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure good ventilation during use.

Please read technical data sheet prior to ordering and use to determine suitability. We also have a chart of various resins' Heat Resistance HERE. If unsure please call us for advice on your particular application. To comply with Hazardous transport regulations, and to provide the lowest transport cost, larger amounts of this resin may be decanted into 5L containers or delivered on a pallet. Please read the Safety Data Sheet before use.

Q & A

What is the HDT (heat deflection temperature) of Crystic 397 PA, and to obtain its maximum what is the post curing schedule?

Crystic 397 PA has a HDT of 117 Deg C on a fully cured laminate. The post curing schedule requires the laminate to be at 24 hours @ 20 Deg C followed by 5 hours @ 80 Deg C then 3 hours @ 120 Deg C . please read tech data sheet attached.

I have been using Crystic 474 pa Polyester resin for moulding camper van roofs, can you advise the difference between this resin and Crystic 397pa.

They are only similar in the respect that they both have heat distortion points higher than typical resins - chemically they are quite different. C.474PA is an orthophthalic  resin with a high maleic content to push up the heat distortion point. C.379PA is an isophthalic / Npg resin so will have better overall properties and higher chemical resistance , particularly towards alkaline chemicals like caustic soda .
